Because Schools often have different needs and more
than 24 children (max capacity on the "Pelican" Pontoon
Boat is 25 passengers), Five Rivers Delta Safaris provides
specific packages to meet the needs of classes/schools.
These packages are available outside of scheduled tour
times and aim to provide a shorter boat trip, that allows
our Captains to educate the children through the tours
based around a specific theme.
For larger groups, the children are generally split
into groups of 24 or less, allowing a rotation of groups
through a variety of activities - while group are out on
the Boat Tour, the other group/groups can be learning
about the Mobile Delta and it's ecology on land in the 5
Rivers Apalachee Exhibit Hall, walking through the Oak
Forest and learning about the trees/animals of the forest,
or watching a program in the Tensaw Theatre, all under the
guidance of a State Lands Delta Expert.
The pricing for the boat tour would be dependant on the
length of time spent on the boat / number of groups of
children taken. The land based activities are provided by
State Lands free of charge.
The mini boat tours can cover a range of topics or be
catered to some of the following specific items (and any
others you can think of):
- Fauna of the Delta
- Flora of the Delta
- American Civil War
- Local History
- Native American Culture
- State Lands Wildlife programs
It is also just a good chance for many children to get
out on the waters of the Delta and realise what a
wonderful resource they have available to them in their
own backyards. While we may not be able to visit certain
locations in the time period allocated on a shorter trip,
talking about many of them, while sitting on a boat does
give children a good reason to learn!
In addition to the Tour, we offer to provide
informational worksheets for children to fill out while on
the boat, with prizes for the best completed sheets / most
correct answers. All information required to complete the
sheets would be available in the commentary provided to
the children by our Captain and based on previous
discussions with the school and trip organizer, regarding
the aim of the trip and what we would like the children to
gain from the experience.
